Oxford University Polish Society is one of the oldest and most established Polish student organizations in the UK. Recently we passed another mile stone. This academic year is the first to witness over 100 Polish students registered at the University of Oxford.
Mission
The Society organizes a wide scope of activities seeking to fulfil the following aims:
- Integrate the Polish community and other members of Oxford University possessing an interest in Poland.
- Promote a better understanding of Polish history, contemporary culture as well as social and political life at the University of Oxford.
- Support the wider interests of the Polish community in the UK.
Scope of Activities
Guest Speakers
The Society aims to organize meetings with prominent Polish figures and other speakers related to Poland. In recent years the following guests have addressed members of the society:
- Prof. Leszek Balcerowicz
- PM Jerzy Buzek
- Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz
- Czeslaw Milosz
- Jan Rokita
- Radoslaw Sikorski
- Prof. Danuta Huebner
Promoting Polish Culture
The Society organizes a wide variety of cultural events. Some of the most successful recent ideas included:
- Independence Day Concert given by Polish students from the Royal College Music
- Screening of “Karol, The Pope, The Man” with an introductory talk by the lead actor Piotr Adamczyk
- Screening of “Katyn” with an introductory talk by Prof. Norman Davies and Prof. Jan Zielonka
- Poetry Evening dedicated to Tadeusz Rozewicz
Social Events
The Society organizes a variety of social events including Food Tastings, Pub Meetings and Parties with Polish themes or to celebrate polish holidays. Recently the following social events have happened:
- Polish brunch
- The Polish-Russian Vodka Party
- The St. Andrew’s Day (Andrzejki) Party
Patronage
In recent years the Oxford University Polish Society formally operated under the patronage of Prof. Leszek Kołakowski, Prof. Zbigniew Pelczynski and Radoslaw Sikorski. The activities of the society have also been supported by Prof. Timothy Garton Ash, Prof. Norman Davies and Prof. Jan Zielonka.
