Last morning at 7.56 BST the President of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, his wife and numerous Polish officials died in the crash of Tupolev 154 at the Smolensk-North airbase, Russia. They were travelling to mark the 70th anniversary of the massacre of over 20 thousand Polish prisoners by the Soviets. None of the 96 aboard the plane survived.
The parliamentary Speaker, Bronisław Komorowski, now the acting president, announced a week of national mourning and two minutes of silence this Sunday, at 11am BST.

Among the victims was Ryszard Kaczorowski, Honorary GCMG, who between 1989 and 1990 served as the last President of Poland in exile. His death is a particularly heavy blow to the UK Poles.
In this difficult time we are very grateful for the many condolences we have received from students and friends of various nations.
